In the wake of Bruce Lee’s success, any number of Asian martial artists were given the chance to star in a movie of their own. One of the least well known of these is the Korean taekwondo expert Park Jong-kuk. Park was given the lead role in Golden Harvest’s ‘Tiger of Northland’. Though this was Park Jong-kuk’s only lead role for the studio, Golden Harvest pulled out all thes stops to try and launch him as a viable lead.
The muscular Park was cast alongside ‘The Big Boss’ leading lady Maria Yi Yi and regular Bruce Lee cohort Tony Liu. The action choreography was handled by the indispensable Sammo Hung. The film was shot on epic locations in South Korea, featuring a mix of Hong Kong and Korean martial artists feeling the sting of Park’s fists and feet.
Despite the studio’s best efforts, this was to be Park Jong-kuk’s only lead role in a Hong Kong action film, and the film remains a fascinating lost gem from 1970s kung fu cinema.
