‘Ip Man’ star Donnie Yen made his contemporary action debut in the cop thriller ‘Tiger Cage’. Though a vehicle for singer/actor Jacky Cheung, the film, directed by Yen’s mentor, Yuen Woo-ping, allowed Donnie to steal the show with his unique blend of Sugar Ray Leonard boxing moves and uniquely dynamic kicking combinations. ‘Tiger Cage’ also marked director Yuen’s transition from period action into cop socky.
The film provides solid roles for such genre veterans as Simon Yam, Wang Lung-wai and Ng Man-tat. Seen as a change of pace role for the amiably Cheung, ‘Tiger Cage’ proved a hit at the domestic box office, but it was Yen who took over the franchise for its sequel.
