The Iron-Fisted Monk Lobbycards

Reel East takes our Heroes of Hung Gar series upriver to include two key figures in the art’s folkloric Shaolin connection.

‘The Iron-Fisted Monk’ stars Sammo Hung as Rice Husker 6, a lay-student of Shaolin Temple who escaped the institution to take on China’s bullying Manchu overlords. He comes under the tutelage of San Te, the legendary Shaolin master portrayed by Gordon Liu in ‘The 36th Chamber of Shaolin’, here played by the muscular action hero Chan Sing.

The film marked the directorial debut of Sammo Hung, and saw him bring classical Hung Gar techniques and the beginnings of kung fu comedy to the big screen. Hung has originally sought to offer the role of Rice Husker 6 to his former Chinese Opera school classmate Jackie Chan, buy Chan was at that time regarded as box office poison!
