The third great action icon of Golden Harvest’s 1980s cinema was Yuen Biao. Wiry and agile, he was given the name ‘Jimmy’ to put him in the same category as ‘Jackie’ Chan. Yuen Biao starred in action movies from a wide variety of genres. These included this time travel action fantasy ‘The Iceman Cometh’, distributed internationally as ‘The Time Warriors’. Its the nearest Hong Kong has come to making an entry in the ‘Highlander’ franchise!
Yuen Biao and co-star Yuen Wah play early Ming dynasty swordsman magically transported into modern (late 1980s) Hong Kong. The film allows Biao to show off his traditional kung fu skills in a modern setting, and to stretch both his comedic and dramatic acting range. Director Clarence Fok also allows co-star Yuen Wah to tear up the screen as a ruthless warrior who effortlessly takes on his new role as a vicious Triad gangster.
The film also has 1980s Hong Kong cinema fave Maggie Cheung as the tart-with-a-heart who takes Biao’s Zheng under her wing.
