In 1991, Golden Harvest studios adapted the Japanese manga ‘Riki-Oh’ into the instant cult classic ‘Story of Ricky’. The film stars rising action hero Louis Fan Siu-wong as the eponymous Ricky. Set primarily in a jail, the film follows the misadventures of the muscular, qi-powered hero as he faces a line-up of wild and weird opponents. The film blends stylised martial arts action with eye-popping (literally!) physical splatter FX. The film also features Japanese martial arts star Yukari Oshima as one of Ricky’s foes. The film was too horrific for Hong Kong audiences, but is now rated as one of the most celebrated cult movies of all time.
