Taiwanese kung fu cinema was wild, weird and wacky, but never boring! The greatest home grown juvenile female action lead was Lin Hsiao-lu. She starred, usually as a young boy, in such off-the-wall epics as ‘Kung Fu Wonder Child’ and ‘A Heroic Fight’. Her best known role was the nearest thing Taiwan has had to a home-grown superhero Peach Boy, a demon-fighting warrior kid named Tao Tai-lang.
What ‘Magic of Spell’, and Lin’s other films, lack in logic, they make up for in sheer madcap inventiveness. Born in 1967, Lin made her film debut at the age of 13, and won a prestigious Golden Horse Award for Best Newcomer. A childhood martial artist and gymnast, she soon established herself as one of Taiwan’s leading lethal ladies. After she out-grew the pre-teen hero roles, Lin Hsiao-lu began working extensively in Taiwanese television.
Reel East is proud to present the rare original theatrical poster from this true cult classic, ‘Hero of Spell’:
