The premise of the film is that, in the wake of the failed Boxer Rebellion, the former leader of the Spirit Boxers, Lui Kung, has abandoned the cause and gone into hiding in the South of China. Various agents are sent from Beijing to find and kill him. This framework allows for some of the most intricate martial arts fights ever committed to film, with Lau immortalising the 18 weapons of his Hung Gar style on the silver screen.
