Hocus Pocus Chinese Lobbycard Set

Reel East celebrates the career of ground-breaking Hong Kong film-maker Sammo Hung as actor, director and producer. Sammo pioneered the action-horror-comedy genre, and in 1984 cast his long-time cohorts Stephen Tung and Lam Ching-ying in ‘Hocus Pocus’.

Something of a lost classic, ‘Hocus Pocus’ is the missing cousin of the better known ‘Spooky Encounters’. The members of a touring Chinese Opera troupe after forced to contend with malevolent supernatural assailants. Horror and hilarity ensue in equal measure…

Star Stephen Tung was first seen by audiences worldwide when he played the kid who experiences Bruce Lee’s ‘real emotional content’ in ‘Enter the Dragon’. He never really succeeded as a leading man in his own right, but instead made his name as an action director, and would many years later contend with a different brand of the supernatural when he choreographed the ‘Scooby-Doo’ movie.

Lam Ching-ying became a genre mainstay when he played a Taoist ghostbuster in ‘Mr. Vampire’. Lam would play versions of this role in various subsequent films and TV series.
