Reel East is proud to celebrate the career of the greatest comedy hero of the 1970s with The Michael Hui Collection.
Michael and his brothers, singing star Sam and comedian Ricky, made their name in Hong Kong on their Hui Bros TV series. The clan brought the Cantonese dialect back to the forefront of Hong Kong popular culture. Beginning with ‘The Warlord’, Michael Hui enjoyed huge success at Shaw Brothers, before decamping for Raymond Chow’s Golden Harvest company.
The Hui Bros’ first Golden Harvest film, ‘Games Gamblers Play’, was an even greater success, with Michael in the director’s chair (helped out by an uncredited John Woo!). Michael and Sam Hui were both good friends of Bruce Lee, and fans of Bruce’s films will see many familiar faces in the movie, which was action choreographed by Sammo Hung. (Hung actually shot a scene that was deleted from the film after its theatrical run).
In the immediate wake of Bruce Lee’s passing, no action star could match his memory, but Michael Hui and his brothers managed to deliver hit after hit, paving the way for the later comedic success of Stephen Chiau.
Reel East is proud to share this classic painted artwork poster printed by Golden Harvest to promote the original theatrical release of the film.
