‘Fist of Legend’ was directed by Gordon Chan, whose range seems limitless, stretching from drama to kung fu to cop dramas to slapstick comedy. Bey and Gordon have collaborated on several projects, including the Jackie Chan epic ‘The Medallion’. They once developed a ‘Fist of Legend’ prequel as a vehicle for Donnie Yen, who later made a completely different SEQUEL, ‘Legend of the Fist’.
The film stars Mainland Chinese kung fu icon Jet Li, alongside Hong Kong industry stalwarts Chin Siu-ho and Billy Chow. Its action was choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping, with whom Logan made ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny’ in New Zealand. Those months on location allowed Bey to interview Yuen Sifu about his work for various book and commentary projects.
Logan also devotes a chapter to ‘Fist of Legend’ in his ’36 Chambers of Kung Fu Cinema Volume Two’.
