Legendary director John Woo was on the verge of making his breakthrough film, ‘A Better Tomorrow’, when he shot the Vietnam war flick ‘Heroes Shed No Tears’, also known as ‘Sunset Fighters’. Shot on location in Thailand, the film was a forerunner to Woo’s later epic ‘Bullet in the Head’.
Woo elicits a fine performance from the underrated Eddie Ko Hung, and casts various Hong Kong stunt players (Lam Ching-ying, Chin Yuet-sang) in challenging roles, with all of them rising to the occasion. Woo also throws Korean actress Lee Hye-sook into the mix for what would be her last Chinese film role. Though a box office disappointment on first release, ‘Heroes Shed No Tears’ has since become a cult favourite.
