As a producer, Sammo Hung spent the 80s taking Hong Kong action cinema in any number of inventive directions. One of his more outre productions was the Cormanesque ‘The Final Test’, which blends the plotline of the Sean Connery vehicle ‘Outland’ with elements from James Cameron’s ‘Terminator’. In the near future, a security chief is assigned to a remote mining colony, where he uncovers a deadly conspiracy. The lead is the late Austin Wai, brother of Shaw Brothers star Wai Yin-hung, with Eurasian swimming champion Deborah Sims as the female lead. Yuen Wah here plays a similar robotic villain to the one he portrayed in ‘Eastern Condors’ the same year. ‘The Final Test’ has cult movie written all over it, and has, indeed, developed an underground following since its first release.
