Director John Woo is such a legendary figure in the world of Hong Kong action cinema, his career as an actor has, understandably, been overlooked. Though he never focussed on this aspect of his talents, Woo has appeared on screen in over 20 movies. He even had a co-lead role in the dramatic Cinema City thriller ‘Rebel from China’.

As the title suggests, the film tells the story of Mainland Chinese immigrants struggling to survive on the mean streets of Hong Kong. Based on a story by director Ringo Lam, the film stars journeyman actor Vincent Wan, with Woo cast as his character’s best friends. The cast also includes Patrick Tse Yin, whose ‘Story of a Discharged Prisoner’ Woo had remade four years earlier as ‘A Better Tomorrow’. It was the diretor’s breakthrough hit.

This film captures an fascinating period of the history of Hong Kong and Mainland China, and also gives John Woo’s fans a rare chance to see him on the other side of the camera. ‘Rebel from China’ was directed by Raymond Lee, otherwise best known for ‘Dragon Inn’.
