Reel East is proud to celebrate the unique collaboration of two heroes of the martial arts movie world: Yuen Biao and Gordon Liu. Only ‘Peacock King’ pits Shaw Bros greatest kung fu icon against one of Golden Harvest’s finest!
This Hong Kong-Japanese co-production brings a manga feel to a live action action film. Yuen Biao plays the eponymous warrior monk, and Gordon Liu is Kubira, his relentless nemesis. The movie also features Japanese stars Mikami Horishi, Ken Ogata and Yasuda Narumi, as well as two other Shaw Bros icons, Kara Wai Yin-hung and Philip Kwok, in supporting roles. Kwok also action directed the film, alongside Stephen Tung Wai, still best known as the kid Bruce Lee schools at the start of ‘Enter the Dragon’.
This film marked the first time Yuen Biao and Gordon Liu had shared the screen since Biao played a kung fu student in the background of Liu’s starring debut, 1976’s ‘Challenge of the Masters’. Yuen Biao here plays a ‘little monk’ role that he would reprise in ‘A Kid From Tibet’, which he also directed. Gordon, better known for playing Shaolin monks, is here in full kung fu Yul Brynner mode as a mystic enforcer.
A major hit across Asia, especially in Japan, the film spawned an SFX heavy sequel.
Reel East is proud to share this rare poster, printed by Golden Harvest to promote the original theatrical release of the film.
